Bikefood

I think it is about time I did a review on the Bikefood products I have been using recently. If you have taken the time to check out their website you will know the companies ethos is based on using natural ingredients with no artificial chemicals. This often means odd sounding concoctions but they seem to do the trick!

Some of the other riders I have spoken to have suggested the energy powder doesn't mix too well but I can honestly say I have not had this trouble with the berry powder I have used. It tastes great and seems to do the job of keeping me well fuelled with ease! I was pouring with sweat from the outset of the national champs on Sunday but despite this, and pushing hard for over an hour, I never once felt lacking in concentration or energy supply. This energy powder also contains a good serving of amino acids to help muscle recovery which is something none of the competition offers and cycling weekly agree is a step ahead.

The next product I have been using is the raw protein powder. This is basically just 100% pure ground hemp (yes, that is the same stuff used to make ropes, sacks and other non-edible things!) At first I tried it mixed with the berry energy drink but this was without doubt, one of the worst things I have ever tasted! Just think of the liquid from the bottom of a compost heap! Next I just mixed it with water, and while it did not disolve particularly well, the flavour was not bad at all. I have tried my fair share of the competition in the past including torq, holland and barrat, met rx and high5 (which made me physically sick!) and I would go as far as saying, this is the most drinkable of the lot! Hemp is naturally full of all the essential amino acids, a good dose of omega oils for happy joints, and very little else. I am hoping that using it will help me develop lean muscle mass and reduce overall weight to help my climbing. I will post longterm results for that later in the year.

The final product I am using is a pre-production caffeine capsule. Again, it is all natural ingredients and contains
120mg of caffeine per unit. The instructions reccommend taking 2 tablets, 15 minutes apart, so I had one pre-race and one on the start line. I couldn't really tell if it made a difference because of the dive into downhill almost immediately. I will be trying the product again at sleepless in the saddle to see if they can keep me awake of the full 24! Further findings will follow!
